How Much is a Pinch of Salt?

Article at a Glance:

  • A pinch is the amount of salt you can grab between your thumb and forefinger—about 1/16 of a teaspoon (0.3 grams).
  • It’s a simple way to enhance flavors in dishes without overpowering them—perfect for soups, meats, veggies, and even baked goods.
  • You can use your fingers, a pinch spoon, or a 1/16 teaspoon for precise seasoning.
  • Different salt textures, like kosher vs. fine, can slightly change the amount in a pinch
  • Sourced from an ancient seabed, Real Salt’s unrefined minerals bring the best flavor to every pinch.

If you’ve ever tried a recipe and come across the term “a pinch of salt,” you might have wondered: How much is a pinch of salt, really? Is it a little sprinkle? A dash? Well, you’re not alone!

Whether you’re an experienced cook or just starting out, understanding this little kitchen mystery can make a difference in your recipes. That’s why we’re here to answer your burning question and even show you how to measure a pinch like a pro (with a little help from our Real Salt Chef, of course!). Let’s dive in!

So, What’s a Pinch of Salt, Anyway?

A pinch of salt is one of those old-school cooking terms that’s a little vague. Basically, it’s the amount of salt you can grab between your thumb and forefinger. Some people prefer a three-finger pinch, which includes the thumb, index, and middle finger and results in a slightly larger quantity of salt.

But if you’re wondering how much that really is, in official terms, a pinch is about 1/16 of a teaspoon. Yep, just a teeny tiny bit. To help you visualize it:

  • 1 pinch = 1/16 teaspoon (around 0.3 grams of salt)

  • 1/8 teaspoon = 2 pinches

  • 1/4 teaspoon = 4 pinches

And because salt comes in different textures, the size of your pinch might vary. For example, Real Salt Kosher will take up more space than a pinch of Real Salt Fine, simply because of the larger grain size (learn more about the difference between Real Salt grain sizes here). But no matter what, it’s still a small but flavorful dose!

Why Use a Pinch of Salt in Recipes?

So why do so many recipes call for a pinch of salt? Well, it’s a great way to add flavor without going overboard. Pinches are often used in recipes when precision isn’t super important—think seasonings for soups, meats, roasted veggies, or even a sprinkle on cookies!

Pinches also come in handy when you just need a little something to enhance the flavors in your dish. You don’t want it to steal the show, just give it that perfect “oomph” without being overpowering. A pinch of salt can be the secret ingredient to making your dish shine!

How to Measure a Pinch of Salt

Now that we’ve got the basics down, let’s talk about how to measure a pinch of salt like a pro:

  1. Use your fingers. This is the classic way! Just pinch a little bit of salt between your thumb and forefinger (and your middle finger if you prefer the three-finger method). Easy peasy.

  2. Pinch spoons. If you want to get fancy (or you’re just feeling extra precise), there are actual pinch spoons that measure 1/16 teaspoon—perfect for making sure you’ve got just the right amount.

  3. Teaspoon method. If you need to measure multiple pinches, you can always use a 1/16 teaspoon (the exact measurement of a pinch). It’s a handy little tool for consistent seasoning!

Real Salt—The Best Pinch You’ll Ever Taste

When you’re measuring out your pinch of salt, quality matters. And that’s where Real Salt comes in. Sourced from an ancient seabed in Redmond, Utah, Real Salt is unrefined and full of natural minerals. It’s the salt your food’s been missing, whether you’re pinching it into a salad, sprinkling it on roasted veggies, or using it in your baking.

And let’s face it—real salt just tastes better. So next time you’re reaching for that pinch, make it a pinch of Real Salt for the best flavor around!

Our 6-year-old daughter sneaks “pinches” out of the salt jar pretty frequently. When she gets caught, she will literally say, “What? I l like salt!” HAHA We honestly do not mind she does. It could be worse, she could be sneaking sugar.
Redmonds is the only salt and tooth paste we have in our house.

I love Redmond’s salt and especially the seasoned salt. I even took my mini shaker to a restaurant last night and used it on my steak. I only wish that when you made it easier to get free shipping with $30, you hadn’t made it ridiculous shipping for those of us up in Alaska! That made ordering it from Amazon my only option.

Thanks so much for your love and support for our salt—we’re so glad you’re enjoying it! We hear you on the shipping costs to Alaska and understand how frustrating that can be. While we do our best to keep shipping rates reasonable, we know it’s not always ideal. We appreciate your feedback and will keep looking for ways to improve.
