Starting your day on the right note can set the tone for a productive and balanced day. As a practitioner and guide of breathwork, I’ve honed a morning routine that not only invigorates but also grounds me, preparing me to navigate the day with calm and clarity. Here’s a glimpse into my morning ritual and how you can incorporate these practices into your routine.

1. The Foundation of Gratitude

Every morning, I begin with a moment of gratitude. This simple yet profound practice sets a positive tone and opens my heart to the day ahead. It’s a powerful reminder of the abundance in life and helps to cultivate a mindset of appreciation.

2. Alpha Brainwave Meditation

Following gratitude, I engage in an alpha brainwave meditation. This meditation increases alpha brain waves, which are produced when you're awake but relaxed. It helps transition my mind from a sleep state to a calm, alert state, fostering creativity and reducing stress. It’s a gentle way to wake up the mind and prepare it for the day’s activities.

 3. Breathwork: The Language of Breath

The cornerstone of my morning routine is breathwork, specifically techniques from the Language of Breath. These practices are designed to enhance awareness and help the body handle hormetic stressors, mild forms of stress that positively impact the body by making it more resilient.

My morning breathwork session typically lasts about 10 minutes, though it can extend based on my specific goals and how I’m feeling that day. Breathwork isn’t confined to mornings alone; I often incorporate it multiple times throughout the day to maintain balance and focus.

Here’s how I structure my breathwork session:

  1. Awareness-Based Breathwork: I start with a few minutes of mindful breathing, bringing awareness to my breath and observing its natural rhythm.
  2. Activating Breathwork: This involves more vigorous breathing techniques to stimulate the body and mind, preparing them for the day ahead.
  3. Downregulation and CO2 Tolerance: I finish with techniques that help increase my CO2 tolerance, promoting calmness and improving my body’s resilience to stress.

The Language of Breath philosophy is built on five core tenets, each playing a crucial role in fostering holistic well-being:

  1. Awareness is the Foundation of All Positive Change: Being aware of our breath and bodily sensations is the first step toward any meaningful transformation.
  2. Your Unconscious Self is as Much You as Your Conscious Self: Recognizing the role of the unconscious mind is vital in understanding our behaviors and patterns.
  3. The Unconscious Self is Always Trying to Help You Survive and Thrive: Trusting that our unconscious mind has our best interests at heart can help us work with it rather than against it.
  4. The Healthiest You is a Whole Self: A sense of wholeness arises when the conscious and unconscious selves work together harmoniously.
  5. Actions are the Words: Communication with the unconscious happens through actions, especially through breathwork. Our actions speak volumes to our inner selves, shaping our well-being.

Breathwork Tips for Beginners

For those new to breathwork, I recommend starting with simple techniques or finding a trusted teacher to guide you. You don’t need to be an expert to begin; it’s all about moving into awareness and starting somewhere. Techniques like breath waves, circular breathing, and CO2 tolerance exercises can be learned progressively.

Key Benefits of a Consistent Practice

A consistent morning breathwork practice offers numerous benefits, including enhanced resilience, better self-connection, and a deeper understanding of the neuropsychological effects of breathwork. It’s a holistic approach that bridges the gap between consciousness and unconsciousness, reducing stress and enhancing self-awareness.

 4. Meditation and Yoga

I also include meditation and yoga in my morning routine. These practices complement breathwork by further promoting relaxation and mental clarity. Typically, I meditate post-breathwork (in addition to the alpha brainwave meditation I do before my breathwork), allowing the calm state induced by breathing exercises to deepen my meditation experience.

5. Embracing Hormetic Stressors

Hormetic stressors, like breathwork and ice baths, play a crucial role in my routine. These controlled stressors help build resilience and improve my ability to handle daily challenges. Weekly ice baths, for instance, have significantly enhanced my calmness and ability to stay collected.

6. Hydration: A Vital Component

Living in the desert, hydration is paramount. I start my day with a focus on proper hydration by drinking Redmond Re-Lyte Hydration, ensuring I consume not just water but also essential minerals and trace elements. This approach helps prevent dehydration and maintains my energy levels throughout the day.

Hydration is not just about drinking water; it’s about ensuring that the water you drink is effectively absorbed and utilized by your body. This is where minerals and electrolytes come into play. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium are crucial for maintaining the balance of fluids in and out of cells, supporting nerve function, muscle contractions, and overall cellular health.

One of the most effective ways to enhance hydration is by incorporating fulvic acid and electrolytes. Fulvic acid, a natural compound found in soil, has been shown to improve the absorption and transportation of nutrients in the body. Studies suggest that fulvic acid can help increase the permeability of cell membranes, allowing for better hydration and nutrient uptake.

Electrolytes are also essential in preventing dehydration, especially in hot climates or during intense physical activity. By adding electrolyte supplements or consuming electrolyte-rich foods and drinks, you can maintain optimal hydration levels, support muscle function, and prevent cramping and fatigue.

The Journey of Self-Discovery

By embracing the power of a healthy morning routine, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation. Breathwork, in particular, unlocks our full potential, offering practical tools for improving mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Through this practice, we learn that we are more than just our bodies; we are an interconnected web of consciousness working together as a team.

Incorporate these elements into your morning routine and experience the profound impact they can have on your day and overall well-being.

I would like to be able to do this but just don’t have that start-up money. Is there any way I can get this done?

Hi Robert! There are many free resources on the internet about mediation and breathwork. A simple morning routine of practicing gratitude and taking a few deep mindful breaths would be a great place to start!
